Interview with Monique DeVere, author of Adam

What can you tell us about your new release, Adam? Adam: Her Deal Maker is the first book in my new Pleasure Flights series. It’s a romantic comedy beach read about co-workers who pilot for a helicopter tour company in California. Adam and Lacey have been fighting their attraction for five years until they’re accidentally booked into the same room at a conference in Washington D.C. And that’s when everything gets complicated. Lacey is a thrill-seeker who has a no-dating-co-workers-rule. Adam is strong, caring and protective—okay, some might call him overprotective. He has a no-dating-thrill-seekers-rule. So that’s the end of that… then they’re assigned the task of negotiating a contract and have to fly to a tropical private island where things really heat up! What or who inspired you to become an author? I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making up stories to entertain my younger siblings. I was one of those kids who spent a lot of time daydreaming. It wasn’t long before I started writing down the stories I made up so when my siblings said, “Tell us the one about…” I’d be able to re-tell it. Soon, my school friends wanted copies of my stories. I wrote more stories and sold them for 10c each. I penned my first full-length novel at age fifteen and I’ve been writing ever since. I guess writing has always been part of my nature, and not something inspired by other writers. What books are currently on your night stand? My night stand and Kindle are very different. On my night stand, I keep my copy of the Holy Bible, along with a devotional, prayer book, and whichever spiritual book I’m currently reading. Right now, that would be Secrets of Enoch & the Apocalypse of Baruch. My Kindle has all sorts! My new TBR pile is the Terri Osburn Ardent Springs series. I’ve only recently discovered Terri and love her voice! If you were a teacher, what book would you assign your class? The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. What’s a typical day like for you?

Alarm goes off at 5:45am.

Rise at 6am. Prayer/Devotion. Exercise. Shower. Drop our teen daughter to school in the next town.

8:45am. Return home; go for a three-mile walk.

10:30am. Grab a cup of herbal tea, a bulletproof coffee, or a protein shake, and head into my study where I remain—trying my best to avoid interruptions—until it’s time to pick our daughter up from school.

4pm. I return home in time for the after-school arrival of two of our granddaughters.

Prepare dinner and catch up with “kiddie” life.

It depends on whether hubby is on days or night shifts as to how the rest of my evening will go. If hubby is on nights, I will head back to work after granddaughters have been collected and hubby has left for work. I’ve been known to work right through until the sun comes up. Then can’t go to bed ’cause, well… it’s morning. Thankfully, that doesn’t occur too often.

If you could invent anything, what would it be? A supplement that busts patience. I wish I had more patience. What scene in Adam was your favorite to write? The Meet-Cute. Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by? My philosophy is simple. “If it causes a problem, it has to go”. Life becomes so much simpler when we live by a code.
